Mt. Cheaha, Alabama (High Point #13), September 2009

Mt. Cheaha, Alabama (2411') September, 2009 (revisited March 2019)

Distance: Drive up.

Trailhead:  Cheaha State Park is located 12 miles south of I-20 off State Highway 281 in northeast Alabama.  From Interstate-20. Take exit # 191. Turn South on U.S. Highway 431 for approximately four miles, then turn on the access road to get to  Highway 281 South to the Park (Watch for the Cheaha Resort State Park Signs).

Cheaha State Park offers some hiking options.  I opted not to hike but to drive to this peak as I was short for time and alone.

A conference in Atlanta was the perfect opportunity to add another state high point to my list so I flew in a day early, rented a car and had a very nice drive to the park.

Once in the park, follow the road to the top of the mountain.  There is a path at the bottom to hike up (short distance, not a lot of gain).

Building at the high point.

View from the top of the tower.

Entrance to the small hiking path.

Kiosk at that little trailhead.
The area has lodging and camping and various small hiking options, as well as a boardwalk to an overlook. There's a map of the park.

I looked around, took a few photos and headed back to Atlanta.
